It is almost time to plant our dahlia tubers here in the Pacific Northwest! Here are a few suggestions that we have for planting dahlias. First select a sunny spot that will get at least 8 hours of direct sunlight. Hotter climates need to provide plants with afternoon shade if summer temperatures are extreme. The ground should be warm and well drained at the time of planting. We recommend using Bone Meal at the time of planting, put a small handful in the hole and work it into the soil well before planting and covering the tuber. Lay the dahlia tuber horizontally 4-6″ deep with the growing eye facing up. Tubers should be planted about 12-24″ apart. Apply slug bait at this time. We recommend re-applying slug bait until plants are at least a foot tall. Do not water tubers after planting!!! The only exception will be in hot climates. Most areas have enough rain for dahlia needs until the shoots appear above the ground.
