Our story has always been a dream. When Jason was in the military, I worked for a local nursery in Silverdale, WA. Between deployments, being restationed around the globe, growing our family, and miscellaneous adventure, we wanted to narrow in on our shared passion of nature, community, and sustainability.
The love of gardening comes from previous generations involvement in farming. My grandfather grew gladiolus and snapdragons for his floral business and my parents, Jay and Susan Allen, founded Allen’s tree farm in 1972. The legacy of love for gardening was a way of keeping the family heritage.
Dahlia’s were initially used as a deterrent for the local deer population. Using the flower as a border for their vegetable garden. Not only did they keep the food safe, but they added a vibrance that made it feel complete.
Of course, the beginning of our journey was trial and error. The real stretch was during Jason’s retirement from the Navy; trying to make the most with what we had with the minimal knowledge of where we would eventually call home in Seabeck. Each year, however, we managed to plant more than the last with varieties of Dahlia’s, Gladioulus, Roses, vegetables, and more.
Knowing the appetite of deers, we knew we were up for a challenge trying to grow the flowers in Seabeck, WA. We got away with it the first year, but the second year the racoons walked right past the flowers and ate the corn. Planting more dahlia’s to add interesting color, we couldn’t decide on just one color, size, or shape. Let’s just say we went a little overboard.
The overabundance of flowers helped us decide to open up our roadside stand to share with our neighbors. When the flowers started selling, the farm called for help from friends and family and began to blossom.
Today, the Seabeck roadside stand is typically open July-October. Featuring fresh cut flowers and bouquets while flowers are in bloom with another location for planting and viewing in Tahya, WA. Our family and veteran owned and operated farm is dedicated to growing an exceptional variety of flowers for any occasion and providing exceptional service to our community. The gardens are open for viewing during the growing season, which is a great time to pick out the tubers you want for the following season!
